Welcome to Parkdale Primary School Moving Forward, Learning Together

Literacy

Teachers develop pupils’ spoken language, reading, writing and vocabulary as integral aspects of the teaching of every subject. English is both a subject in its own right and the medium providing access to the whole curriculum. Fluency in the English language is an essential foundation for success in all subjects.

Our Curriculum Learning Values of resilience, pride, collaboration, exploration, creativity and innovation are evident across the teaching of Literacy throughout the school. We also create opportunities to discuss British Values wherever possible.

Phonics

Phonics is the step up to word recognition. Children learn the phonetic sounds for individual letters and letter combinations. Automatic reading of all words – decodable and tricky – is the ultimate goal. Short, daily phonics lessons which include IT, fun games and activities happen in Reception and Key Stage One classes.

Reading

The programmes of study for reading consist of two dimensions: word reading, comprehension (both listening and reading). A recent whole school focus in the teaching and learning of reading comprehension has been to improve pupils use of 'inference'. Inference is where pupils must reach a conclusion about a text on the basis of evidence and reasoning. Pupils learn to read fluently, understand extended prose (both fiction and non-fiction) and are encouraged to read for pleasure. School promotes wider reading. We provide excellent library facilities and set ambitious expectations for reading at home.

Writing

Pupils develop the stamina and skills to write at length, with accurate spelling and punctuation. They learn about the correct use of grammar. They build on what they have been taught to expand the range of their writing and the variety of the grammar they use. The writing they do includes narratives, explanations, descriptions, comparisons, summaries and evaluations.

Speaking and Listening

Pupils learn to speak clearly and convey ideas confidently using Standard English. They should learn to justify ideas with reasons;

ask questions to check understanding; develop vocabulary and build knowledge; negotiate; evaluate and build on the ideas of others; and select the appropriate register for effective communication.
